The Chinese trade name of synthetic isotactic polypropylene fibers was prepared from propylene, a by-product of petroleum refining. Also known as polypropylene fiber. The raw materials are abundant, the production process is simple, and the product price is relatively lower than other synthetic fibers. The physical and mechanical properties of the fibers are as follows: high strength (short fibers 4-6 g/d, filaments 5-8 g/d), similar wet strength and dry strength, low specific gravity (0.91), wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The annual output of polypropylene fibers in the world has exceeded 1 million tons in 1980.

Varieties and Structure of Polypropylene Fiber

Varieties:

The varieties of polypropylene fibers include filaments (including undeformed filaments and bulged deformed filaments), short fibers, bristles, membrane cracked fibers, hollow fibers, profiled fibers, various composite fibers and non-woven fabrics. It is mainly used to make carpets (including carpet bottom cloth and suede), decorative cloth, furniture cloth, various ropes, strips, fishing nets, oil-absorbing felt, building reinforcement materials, packaging materials and industrial cloth, such as filter cloth, bag cloth, etc. In addition, it is widely used in clothing. It can be blended with various fibers to make different types of blended fabrics. After knitting, it can be made into shirts, coats, sportswear, socks and so on. The flocculant made of polypropylene hollow fiber is light, warm and elastic.

Structure:

Polypropylene fibers do not contain chemical groups that can bind to dyes in macromolecular structure, so dyeing is difficult. Usually, pigments and polypropylene polymers are blended evenly in screw extruder by melt coloring method. The colour fastness of coloured fibers obtained by melt spinning is very high. Another method is copolymerization or graft copolymerization with acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, vinylpyridine, etc. to introduce polar groups that can combine with dyes into polymer macromolecules, and then dye them directly by conventional methods. In the production of polypropylene fibers, various additives are often added to improve dyeing, light resistance and flame resistance.
