It may be labeled a concept, but the BMW Concept iX3 previews the next step in electrification at BMW. The production-bound SUV features a single electric motor capable of producing more than 270 horsepower, which is fed electrons via a 70-kWh battery pack. BMW claims the concept can travel 249 miles on a single charge on the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), although U.S. drivers should expect less than 200 miles of driving range from the iX3 on the more realistic EPA test cycle.
Ushering in the fifth generation of BMW’s EV technology, the Concept iX3 features a new charge controller that can accommodate 150-kW charging, which is capable of replenishing the battery pack in as little as 30 minutes. Additionally, the iX3 features a model-specific rear-axle subframe and other chassis changes to accommodate the new powertrain.
Visually separating the Concept iX3 from its X3 30i and M40icounterparts are a number of distinct styling details. Notably, the model wears the brand’s latest kidney-grille design and a new lower-fascia treatment. Blue accents around the grille, side skirts, and rear diffuser, as well as a set of aero-friendly wheels, further identify the iX3 as a member of BMW’s i family of EVs and plug-in hybrids.
The iX3 is slated to be produced at the BMW Brilliance Automotive plant in Shenyang, China, and imported to the United States. Look for the Concept iX3’s styling and powertrain details to remain intact once the model begins series production in 2020.
